Day 20 – Harry Potter Series

Okay, I admit it – I haven’t read them!!! My kids have, and I half listened to their reading aloud, in their primary school years, so that counts??? and I read the first three chapters, but that was it.

This series just didn’t grab me like it did the entire population of the Western world.

Perhaps the heady commercialism of it all put me right off.

Perhaps if Harry and Hermione took off to Stockholm or Fjallbacka, I might sit up and take more notice.

Perhaps if I was interested in Twilight, I would like Harry Potter?

I really don’t know what more I can say on this day’s topic.

Oh! And I am not into Twilight either!

  2. Ok. I confess. I have read them all. I found the story telling to be interesting just by the way J K Rowling wrote them. Her use of Latin as names of characters and for her spells and potions was interesting. It isn’t just a narrative but also a way of showing prejudice and intolerance to young people. I compared it to the rise of the Nazis and the Holocaust. I once saw an interview with JK Rowling who mentioned the same thing. If you read it with this in mind you will see a different side to the books and really appreciate her works. You can see with each book how it got darker.
    I read the first Twilight book as my daughter was heavily into them. Now she cringes at the thought of being such a fan. But she and I have great discussions of the Harry Potter series.
    So have a go. 😀

  3. Twilight is nothing like Harry Potter 🙂 I started my journey with the famous five series (obviously), but Harry Potter is what kept me going!
    Now that I’ve moved on to Dostoyevsky, Gorky, Dickens and the like, it does seem a bit childish to me but there’s something magnetic about Hogwarts that I just can’t get over. 🙂

    1. Yes, this seems to be the consensus with everyone, but this magic just didn’t happen for me with Harry. Although as Raewyn commented, I do like the underlying themes. And I know Twilight is different to Harry Potter, the comparison I should have made more clear was due to its overwhelming popularity in the media at the moment.
