Proverbial Thursday – Proverbs and Sayings from around the World

I find profound wisdom in proverbs, sayings and quotes and marvel at the way they are so succinct in communicating messages to the reader. Mostly anonymous, they come to us from past generations and across cultures, and speak of the experiences of lives lived and lessons learned. Quotes like proverbs, can make us think more deeply about something.Proverbial thursdfly sml 3932

Each Thursday, I post a /Proverb or Saying and a Quote that I find thought-provoking.  I hope you will too.

A saying today from Norway contributed by Tina over in Vienna that reflects the way I feel about the environment. But as with all proverbs, the interpretation is with the reader.

It’s dangerous to all live on the same balloon, carrying needles. It’s not like you can choose to poke a hole only in your part –from a Norwegian children’s song, where the refrain goes:

Balloons are things you have to be careful with, because they break so easily if they’re not left alone. And how could someone say that half of it is mine, and I’m gonna poke a hole in your half!

[Tina: Everday Life in Vienna]

About Forestwoodfolk

Scandinavian culture, literature and traditions are close to my heart, even though I am Australian. I have Scandinavian, Frisian and Prussian/Silesian ancestry and for that reason, I feel a connection with that part of the world. I am an avid Nordic Crime fiction reader, and enjoy photography, writing and a variety of cooking and crafts, and traditional decorative art forms. Politically aware and egalitarian by nature, I have a strong environmental bent.

The first one is wonderful. Sometimes, nations (or even individuals) forget that we share this world with millions of others. An environmental – or otherwise – catastrophe in a small area can wreak havoc so many miles away. As for the second, others will see us as we see ourselves and the image we create to suit it. Self respect is vital.

  5. Someone paraphrased from that quote in a comment on something I read yesterday but I can’t for the life of me remember what I was reading at the time. Maybe it was you! I remember thinking at the time it was such a great analogy for our global community and the lack of action in certain areas, particularly in regard to the environment.
I love a good quote. I have quotegarden.com on speed dial (well, the internet/browser equivalent of speed dial).
