Proverbial Thursday – Proverbs and Sayings from Around the World

I find profound wisdom in proverbs, sayings and quotes and marvel at the way they are so succinct in communicating messages to the reader. Mostly anonymous, they come to us from past generations and across cultures, and speak of the experiences of lives lived and lessons learned. Quotes like proverbs, can make us think more deeply about something.

Each Thursday, I post a Proverb or Saying and a Quote that I find thought-provoking.  I hope you will too.

  2. Oooh. Another two thought provoking proverbs. We all need time to find out who we really are – what we love doing, what our beliefs are and our values. A lot of things are learnt through over time, and as we grow it’s natural we look to others as role models and (then) define ourselves. So I am not surprised it takes us a long time to be really happy with who we are. After all, it can be a long learning process. Hope this week has been good for you 🙂

      1. Believe it or no. My grandmother used to say timely Proverbs for every situations. So relevant so thoughtful. It makes us wonder. Quotes are wise but Proverbs makes us think and extract meanings.

  5. Both of these quotes are extremely thought provoking, but the second one just stirs something in me. It certainly took me long enough to know myself, along with my true values and goals in life.
    The first quote I can only wholeheartedly agree with. What good is knowledge if we do not make good use of it? 🙂

    1. The mother of Bob Hawke ex Australian PM said much the same thing. Apparently Bob was extremely intelligent but she always told him that was not as important as what you DID with your intelligence and how one used it. I have always been an information seeker. Knowledge is never wasted. Thanks for your comment.

    1. Thank you Angelswhisper. Some of them are really great, arent’ they? Some of the readers write them down in a little book specially for quotes. I like to keep track of the wisdoms here on my blog

  8. What a great idea. Being a nerd, I used to spend some of my recesses in elementary school hanging out in the Library–for fun. One of the books I loved there was a book of sayings from around the world. Typical for me, the only one I remember now is a crude one–purported to be from Iceland (which I will NOT quote here). You have so much more class than I, Amanda. the Sally Field quote was a surprise, and so was M-R’s response to it.

And the sayings… some of them are such gems, and others a bit of a mystery. Especially some from little known parts of the world. Icelanders have a unique sense of humour!   9. I will be honest. I am very much enjoying my blast through tonight–I love that you mix it up, as I do–but it may be ages until the next stop. I am now Following almost 40 blogs, and as you can tell from M-R’s place, I am a compulsive commenter. It wears me out to follow and read blogs, much as I enjoy it, and I have little time for life. Mine is small enough now, and challenged in a few special ways. I am somehow going to improve on that small life–bound and determined–for it did not used to be so small.

    I will be glad to return when I can, and I enjoy being asked if you have a post you think I would especially enjoy or that you are particularly proud of and want to share with the world.

I think it is a bit crazy to stick to one theme, when there is so much to be said… Return when you can, but if it gets too much, as it did for me in the early days. ( restrict the emails in settings) so that your inbox doesn’t go into spasms!!!! LOL!!!
