Proverbial Thursday – Proverbs and Sayings from around the World

I find profound wisdom in proverbs, sayings and quotes and marvel at the way they are so succinct in communicating messages to the reader. Mostly anonymous, they come to us from past generations and across cultures, and speak of the experiences of lives lived and lessons learned.

Quotes like proverbs, can make us think more deeply about something.

Each Thursday, I post a Proverb or Saying and a Quote that I find thought-provoking.  I hope you will too.

Two Danish perls of wisdom this week, although the proverb to me seems a little harsh!

The road to hell is paved with good intentions.

Danish Proverb

Den de vover, mister fodfæste for en tid. Den, der intet vover, mister sig selv.

He who dares, loses his footing for a time. He who dares not, loses himself

  1. The Afrikaans For the first one : Die pad na die hel is uitgele met goeie voornemens. My husband used it a lot when “bad” things started to happen

  2. Mentiras tem pernas curtas.
    Lies have short legs.

Meaning: Don’t lie as you’ll soon be caught.

PS. I started a challenge for proverbs last year but discontinued it as people didn’t seem interested.
I find it a fascinating way to learn about other cultures.

    1. Lies have short legs!! I love it. What language is the original? I am sorry I missed your challenge, as I would surely have participated. Perhaps we could think about doing this kind of thing again? As there are a few who have been contributing here?

  3. Oooh, the second quote is fabulous. We all have to lose our footing at some point – that throws us out of our comfort zone. By falling, we learn to pick up ourselves and find out that the world does not stop when we lose our footing and fall. Thank you for sharing these pearls of wisdom 🙂
