Proverbial Thursday – Proverbs and Sayings from around the World

I find there to be profound wisdom in proverbs, sayings and quotes and I marvel at the way they are so succinct in communicating messages to the reader. Mostly anonymous, they come to us from past generations and from across cultures. They speak of the experiences of lives lived and lessons learned. Quotes, like proverbs, make us think more deeply about something.

Each Thursday, I post a Proverb or Saying and a quote that I find thought-provoking.  I hope you will too.

Det er med løgn som med en snebold, jo længere den triller, jo større bliver den.

It is with lies as with a snowball, the longer they continue, the bigger they become.

                     -Danish Proverb

I like to listen. I have learned a great deal from listening carefully. Most people never listen.

Ernest Hemingway

Something to Ponder About this Thursday

  1. Love the Hemingway quote. Some people don’t read but it’s even sadder when they don’t listen or never listen. I suppose when they don’t listen, they think they are full of importance and the world revolves around them. In truth, the world waits for no one and we’re really better off trying to work with those around us.

    1. How true are your words, Mabel? The world is not perfect, nor the people in it, and we have to learn to get along with allwalks of life. I have not been someone who talks a lot, but I am a good listener, at least, I hope I am.

      1. You are very right, Amanda. We’re not perfect. We all might as well treat others like how we want to be treated as opposed to burning bridges. Believe me, I have burned bridges in the past and it’s very unpleasant.

Love your proverbial Thursdays. The quotes do inspire me to think a bit about the world.

      2. Mabel, you mentioned burning bridges and it is unpleasant. There are times when we have to make the decision to walk away from someone in our lives, as hurtful as that can be. But it is all part of life’s learning experiences, are they not? Thank you for your always kind and thoughtful comments. They are very much appreciated.

  2. Beautiful quotes.

Hemingway’s words resonate with me. With so much conflict in the world it is more important than ever to open our minds, to listen fully, to not assume, but when in doubt, ask.

    1. I agree wholeheartedly with your comment, Coffee! Even when we think we are listening, it is useful to remember that we have to concentrate on their words carefully, in order to get the message along with the words spoken.
Thanks so much for your comment

  3. Both quotes are again very thought-provoking. I love the image created in the Danish one (not to mention the excellent way in which you present it in Danish!). The snowball illustrates the concept of continued lies so well.

    1. I had to translate the first from the Danish myself, so it may not be the absolute correct translation, but I am pretty sure I got the context correct! I adore these old proverbs, particularly if they are Dansk!!!! Thanks for your comment! I am so happy that you liked both quotes.
