Proverbial Thursday – Proverbs and Sayings from around the World

I find there is profound wisdom in old proverbs, sayings and quotes and I marvel at the way they are so succinct in communicating their message, to the reader.

Mostly anonymous, they come to us from past generations and from across many cultures. They speak of the experiences of lives lived and lessons learned.

Quotes, like proverbs, make us think more deeply about something.

Each Thursday, I post a Proverb or Saying and a quote that I find thought-provoking.  I hope you will too.

Continuing with the Danish theme from last week, we have a slightly tongue-in-cheek proverb:

Du kender ikke din familie, før end du har arvet.

You don’t know your family, until you see what it is you have inherited.

and from Mahatma Gandhi, this saying:

“The weak can never forgive. Forgiveness is the attribute of the strong.”

Some wise words to seriously ponder about.

  1. Love the Mahatma Ghandi quote. When we forgive someone, we know we are right. We are swallowing our pride and face when we decide to chose not to hold a grudge against the other person, choosing not to be full of ourselves saying, “I am better than you”. I also think the strong ones are the ones who don’t forget. Forgive but don’t forget, not only because we can never be too careful of the other person hurting us again, but also because each act of forgiveness is a lesson in humility.

  2. To forgive someone who has wronged or hurt us can be difficult sometimes, but necessary for us to move on, rid of pent-up feelings. I definitely agree that it’s an attribute of the strong. As for the proverb, it’s probably true in many cases, though perhaps not all. Thought-provoking. 🙂

    1. That is the best aspect to proverbs, Millie. They do make us ponder about something! I am glad this one struck a cord with you. It did with me also. The world needs more forgiveness which seems to be a fast disappearing trait. Perhaps the world is becoming weaker?
