I find there to be profound wisdom in proverbs, sayings and quotes and I marvel at the way they are so succinct in communicating messages to the reader. Mostly anonymous, they come to us from past generations and from across cultures. They speak of the experiences of lives lived and lessons learned. Quotes, like proverbs, make us think more deeply about something.
Each Thursday, I post a Proverb or Saying and a Quote that I find thought-provoking. I hope you will, too.
Patience is the key of joy, but haste is the key of sorrow.
-Arabic proverb
Confidence comes not from always being right but from not fearing to be wrong -Peter T. Mcintyre
Something to ponder about this Thursday

A philosophic Aussie writes here at StPA, one who will readily admit to loving Scandinavia. I'm interested in global politics and what drives us to be who we are. Scratch the surface and you'll find a practical Environmentalist with an egalitarian bent, trying to unleash a little creativity via the written word.
Scandinavian culture, literature and traditions are close to my heart, even though I'm Australian. Travel and courteous discussions greatly broaden the mind, so I travel if I can and am always up for a vigorous, respectful discussion. I'm an avid reader, a writer and I enjoy photography and crafts, particularly traditional art forms. I hope you'll find 'Something to Ponder About,' in my WordPress Community.

Love the confidence quote, Amanda. Confidence is certainly not being afraid to fall, not being afraid to admit that we’re not always spot on. I believe it’s also a trait we earn when we’re comfortable with ourselves and stop comparing ourselves with others in a bid to impress others. When we’re confident, we believe that we still can do it even if we have setbacks and face challenges. At the end of the day, confidence comes from having faith and self-belief in ourselves.

So true, Mabel. I picked this quote this week thinking you would like it. Confidence is critical and is earned through life experience and self belief. I think many American youth have a lot more confidence than Australia youth of the same age and I wonder why that is? What do you think? It is always lovely to read your responses to Proverbial Thursday. It helps stimulate further discussion and thinking. I appreciate it very much. Have a great week, Mabel.

I’m not too sure if I’m right about this, but I have the impression mental health issues are more prevalent among Australian youth, leading to less confidence among this demographic. It’s an issue that has garnered quite a bit of attention in the media over the last two years. It could be something else, I don’t know but it’s my guess.
Really love your Proverbial Thursdays. I haven’t head of most of the quotes, and I love how you bring in quotes that weren’t originally in English.

Thanks Mabel. If you have some old sayings from your family I would love to post them. And I think you are right about mental health issues in terms of youth suicide esp. in rural areas.

The second quote is my favourite one here – and I think Lauren Bacall would readily promote it! Not fearing to be wrong suggests to me that the person is so confident in him/herself that, on the occasions when he/she is proven wrong, it doesn’t knock them back into a state of self-doubt and uncertainty. They would simply put it down to a learning experience and move on. (Hope that all makes sense.) 🙂
