Sunday Sayings – Reality

Several years ago, I created ‘Proverbial Friday’ on my blog. I became fascinated with traditional proverbs, quotes and sayings, their metaphorical layers and the many different interpretations found within just a few, succinct words. I marveled at their ability to transcend race, religion, opinions and age.

Malice leaves reality behind.
(Mexican Proverb)

Since the mind drives the body, it’s the way you think that eventually makes the dreams you dream possible or impossible.

Your reality is simply a reflection of your thoughts and the way you routinely contemplate what you know to be true.

Dreams are what you hope for;

reality is what you plan for.

(Albanian Proverb)

We are what we repeatedly do.

Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit.

– Aristotle

Sayings, quotes and proverbs offer us knowledge; knowledge that is passed to us in much the same way a relay runner might pass a baton. Once it’s handed over, it is up to us what we do with it and how we pass it on.

  1. Hope is a powerful word that has lost much of its meaning in our culture. I have come to see hope as much more than a fervent wish. It is an acceptance of a reality that has not yet been realized but is assured. It is also movement towards that reality in faith believing that power higher than one self is at work along with you

    1. I agree with you that hope is akin to a reality that is not realized. I never assumed it would be assured, but oddly enough, if one hope is strong enough, the ‘wish’ seems to come to pass. This, I find very interesting. Being a person who is quite realistic, I find it intriguing that visualization and positive expectations have any bearing on outcomes. Yet, it seems that they do. I am not religious in the conventional sense, but if that is the label one puts on the higher or universal force, then I understand it to be responsible. Thanks so much for you comment. It has given me more to think about. In what way has it lost much of its meaning. Do you think hope is bandied about too loosely?

      1. I do. In its original form hope was linked to destiny or fate (depending on which of those you believed in). Now hope is linked more to a wish which can be anything from “Oh I hope Mom brings her apple danish to the family reunion this year” to “I hope I win the lottery this week.”

    1. He was so wise and practical. It just goes to show that some characteristics of life must not have changed that much since ancient times. In terms of how we learn, perhaps?

  2. The reminder about habits is encouraging – sometimes we think excellence or certain outcomes are a result of someone born with a talent of having more fortuitous circumstances – when many times it is grit and keeping at it with habits –
Inviting all of us to remember we can attain certain things we need for our lives

    1. The habit of perserverance and a great pro-active attitude can result in amazing things! Fall down seven times, get up eight is another adage I have read that embodies perseverance. Would that be your view, Yvette?

  3. I imagine walking a path through the woods, step by step, as our reality, while a child skipping joyfully ahead embodies our hopes. 🏞

    1. I agree that children are our hope for the future, Nancy, whether they are our own children or someone else’s. The skipping along ahead certainly evokes a carefree, joyous time of one’s life. It is hard to imagine our future as bright if the environment doesn’t facilitate that experience. Thanks so much for taking the time to comment. Great to hear from you.

  4. I was tickled to see that you are reading Mark and Angel. I have saved so many of their posts and their downloaded book from so many years ago. They were a great addition to my growth.

Your reality is simply a reflection of your thoughts. This is a basic premise of Science of Mind. That came before Mark and Angel. There is so much out there that confirms all the proverbs. We are just relearning with different words and understanding. The ancients had so many of the answers but were discarded by fundamentalist who could only see one path. There are many paths. If there is compassion and kindness they will all lead us home.

Malice leaves reality behind. Malice creates a filter that clouds our reality.

Dreams are what you hope for; reality is what you plan for.The dream is first that can become real by the plan. Love this one.
We are what we repeatedly do.

Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit. This makes perfect sense. You don’t get excellent at anything by doing it once, at least not usually. You have to do it over and over again and then it becomes a practiced habit.

Hope I’m not overstepping here. I want to be careful.

    1. You sure are NOT overstepping anything, Marlene. Everyone’s opinion is valid here! We don’t necessarily have to agree. Reading your coment, I do wonder how you got to be so wise!
Compassion and kindness are what everyone would say they want to receive yet sadly, so many choose not to practise or show any.
It’s is encouraging to hear that you see confirmation of proverbs’ meaning in daily life because it seems we discuss those parrellels to our modern lives and often find commonalities. The meanings and messages are timeless! You don’t even need to follow any kind of religious faith to understand the wisdom and life lessons the proverbs are try to convey to us.
I avoid any kind of extremes; fundamentalist or libertarian. I suspect you would have also tried to find and tread the middle path – it is my trusted mantra, my thoughts and my reality! It is snug right there in the middle!!
Everyone finds their own path in life, be that dark or light, twisty or straight. Without compassion and kindness we might eternally wander unsettled and searching for home. Thanks for sending some of your compassionate spirit across the ocean, via your words, Marlene. Always, always a delight to read.
